There are several practice management tools out there that I am sure everyone is familiar with (everything from Time Matters to Rocket Matter).

I want something that meets the following criteria:

1) extensible in sophisticated ways
2) supports hourly, project-based engagements as well as complex, fixed-price projects
3) allows us to track every aspect of an estate planning engagement

Right now there is nothing that fits that description. Some of the tools say that they support "projects" -- but I haven't seen anything that lets me easily design arbitrary screens and database tables to add on to the existing platform.

I have a few foundation pieces in mind. Keeping it under wraps for now. But once I have a solution in place, you'll all get to hear about it!

Very curious about this sentence in your post:
"I am still undecided on the technology that will serve as the foundation for our next-generation practice management tool."

I am currently weighing Daylite, Clio, Things, Bento, Filemaker 11, AB, iCal, and some combination of all those things. (Think I need another choice?!?)

So my ears perked up at your mention of a new practice management tool. Care to share any particulars or goals of the project?

Thanks
